Breathing Through (Over & Around!) Life's Obstacles

Like many yogis, I find it challenging to keep up my practise and peace of mind when life throws obstacles in my way. For some of you the obstacle might be more hours at the office that conflict with a favourite class at the local yoga studio. For others it might be an illness or injury that prevents you from practising as you like.

Sometimes life's obstacles even place themselves into the path of my regularly scheduled yoga teaching. In October, a sudden and unexpected sandstorm forced me to cancel a beautiful full moon beach yoga session I had so badly wanted to teach.

My most recent obstacle is business that has taken me to the other side of the world from Dubai, UAE all the way to Arizona, USA. I was meant to be here for 3 weeks and I've just learned that my stay will be a total of 6 weeks. This is when I have to remind myself to breathe. I prefer to be in Dubai with my family and teach the sunrise beach yoga on Saturday mornings and the evening Hatha Flow & Yin Yoga classes during the week.

One mantra that I repeat silently to myself when faced with life's immovable obstacles is: "Release everything over which I have no control."

During the holiday season when unexpected obstacles are dropped in your path, take time to breathe and perhaps repeat the mantra a few times to help you to return to a place of peace and acceptance.
Due to my absence, FoYD classes are paused from 1 December 2012 - 15 January 2013
I wish you all a peaceful holiday season and I hope to see you in class and on your mats in 2013.

Eid Mubarak!

Happy Eid to all of you out there who are celebrating this season. I hope that the time with friends and family is joyful and rejuvenating.

I'm happy to have a few days off to spend time with my husband and friends and just breathe! Even yoga teachers can have a very hectic schedule, which doesn't seem very 'yogic' at all.
Due to the holiday, this week's class schedule has changed slightly. (See below)

Monday 29 October is a full moon and I'm offering a Full Moon Yoga class on the beach in Jumeirah 2. We'll start off with pranyama (breathing techniques) and meditation followed by asana practice (Moon Salutations!) and then wrap up our 90-minute session with twists and stretches and a delicious shavasana. We'll do all this bathed in the light of the big round moon and serenaded by the rhythm of the waves of the Arabian Sea. Is there a better way to end a Monday? To add the icing on the cake, I'm offering this class FREE of charge. All you need is a mat, a bottle of water and a towel.  Pre-booking is essential: fieldsofyoga@gmail.com

New Classes on Offer!

I'm really excited to be able to respond to the requests that I have had for more classes. Adding to Monday night's schedule I'm now offering Yin Yoga (6:45pm-8pm) and on Saturdays Ladies-Only yoga is offered from 1pm-2:15pm. Both new classes will take place at the home studio in Umm Sequiem 1.

Yin Yoga (a.k.a. Decompress for Athletes) is fantastic for anyone with tight hamstrings, hips, shoulders or back. This is a passive yoga practice. All postures are seated or prone and are held for 3 to 5 minutes each. Yin Yogis will get a deep but gentle stretch of the muscles and connective tissue. You'll leave the class with a fantastic feeling of lubricated joints and increased flexibility as well as a deep sense of peace and relaxation. This is the perfect compliment to running, weight lifting and team sports such as football/soccer and rugby. (Mondays 6:45pm)

Ladies-Only Yoga is a wonderful environment filled with like-minded ladies ready to get their yoga on! We will strengthen our core, firm up our legs and arms, increase our flexibility, sweat-out the toxins and enjoy a renewed sense of inner peace through this Hatha Flow practice. (Saturdays, 1pm)

Why Yoga?

I am often asked why I practise yoga.  I find it difficult to give the answer as it is multi-layered and very personal.  I suppose the quick and easy answer is that practising yoga makes me feel good. In truth, there is so much more that the practice does for me.

Whether in the stillness of meditation or whilst sweating through various asanas and vinyasas, yoga forces me to become aware of my breath, my heart rate, blood pressure, lung capacity, muscles and the other vital functions of my body. I've learned to listen to my body. This, in turn, has helped me to slow down off the mat, to become aware of what is happening in the environment around me.  Countless times during the day we ask those around us, "How are you?" But how often do we listen to and hear the answer? Yoga helps me not only to listen to my body, but to listen to and hear others. It clears my mind so that I can take the time to be open and receptive to those around me.

Another reason that I choose yoga over all other forms of exercise is my back. For the last 10 years I have struggled with disc problems in my lower back. I had chronic pain for years and have been to countless physio-therapists, orthopaedic surgeons, chiropractors, acupuncturists, massage therapists...you get the idea. Regular yoga practise has been the single most effective 'treatment' of the compressed discs in my back.  The movement and freedom I feel with regular practise is unmatched. In fact, if I go more than a week without doing yoga, the pain in my back is a shocking reminder that I need to unroll my mat and do some sun salutations.

The emotional benefits of doing yoga are what I find the most difficult to explain.  During and immediately after the practice I feel euphoric; it's almost as if I have taken some sort of drug. My skin glows, I can't stop smiling, the tension in my neck and shoulders release and I just feel love and light and happiness emanating from my very being. Sounds crazy, right?  Several years ago while attending Mass, our priest asked the congregation to sit quietly with their hands in their laps, palms up, close the eyes and become aware of God's presence within each of us. You can call the presence God or the force of the universe or the essence of good but whatever you call it, I believe that we all have this light -as well as darkness- within us.  What yoga does for me is to help this light, this presence to brighten and strengthen and spread throughout my mind, my body and my soul so that it dominates my very being.  As granola and hippy as it all may sound, these feelings of light and love make sense given that the word 'yoga' means 'yoke' or 'connection' of the mind, the body and the soul. Through my yoga practice I feel that the various areas of my being become reconnected and work together on the same path, toward the same goal.

Now as a yoga teacher, I get to share this light and connection with others. In a previous post I shared that I was struggling to decide what to do with my career path as yoga teaching brings great satisfaction but little financial reward. I think I have now found a good blend of yoga teaching and classroom language teaching. I feel blessed to be able to share a practice that has made such a profound and positive difference in my life. I hope that my students also benefit from the happiness, light and love I feel.

Grateful to be Home

Our long, lovely summer holiday has come to an end. We travelled to the other side of the world and had quite an adventure with family and friends in Panama and the Bahamas. While in Panama City, I had the great fortune to discover Yoga Akila, a small studio in the Paitilla District of the city, just across from the Hard Rock Hotel, for those of you who are familiar with Panama.  Mijael, one of the main instructors in the studio, had such a unique way of teaching and encouraged us to connect with the sacred within each of us. He leans away from traditional Sun Salutations and works more on individual postures that work on strengthening the core. After each of his classes I felt as if I had exercised from the inside out. During Shavasana (corpse pose) and after a period of silence, Mijael played beautiful chants and encouraged the students not only to sing along but to hear and believe the words they sung. What a unique and divine way to end our yoga sessions!

At the end of July after a lovely, relaxing day out with my husband, I took a taxi to Yoga Akila for another of Mijael's classes. It was another great class and the yoga combined with the wonderful day I'd had left me feeling absolutely blissful. I believe in the Yin/Yang balance in life and sometimes I come face to face full force with this belief. That evening was one such time.

As I floated out of the studio, I hailed a taxi to take me back to my cousin's home.   Joyfully riding home, I thought about how I was going to share what I had just experienced with my family, friends and students. Suddenly I was awoken out of my daydream to find that the passenger riding in the front seat of the taxi was climbing in the back seat to attack me. What's worse was that the taxi driver and this man were working together. It took some time before I realized that they wanted my money and mobile phone. However, even after I gave them what they wanted, they wouldn't let me out of the car.  My mind raced and I continued to shout, scream and fight to get out of the car. When the attacker placed his hands around my neck and began to choke me, something within me told me to stay calm. My voice and body became quiet and still. I was very frightened but something else within me took over. Somehow I knew that if I was calm, they would also be calm.  Sure enough he released his grip from my neck and after a few more scary miles, they stopped and let me out of the car. The overwhelming feeling I had was gratitude.  I was thankful to be alive, thankful to be released from that nightmarish ordeal, and thankful that I wasn't physically injured in the process. Emotionally the experience has left a mark on me but with each day that passes, the mark becomes fainter.

The rest of our holiday was lovely and I was happy to heal surrounded by the love and warmth of my family. We had the opportunity to travel to the province of Chiriqui (my father's birthplace) to an area called Boquete. What a stunning place to visit! Coffee plantations, horse farms, fresh produce and lush green mountains surround you in this Panamanian jewel.

Flash yoga at a thoroughbred horse farm in Chiriqui, Panama
We also went to the small town of Las Tablas where the annual Festival of the Polleras takes place.  The Pollera is the traditional Panamanian dress, hand made with intricately stitched details. Women also wear elaborate bead work in their hair and loads of delicate gold chains around their necks. What a treat to see them dance and display this traditional artwork.
Ladies wearing the Pollera, the traditional dress of Panama
Our Panamanian trip ended in the company of my son and his friend. They travelled from Seattle, Washington, USA to spend a few weeks with us. While there the three of us visited the Pozos Termales in El Valle de Anton where for a couple of dollars, one can smear warm volcanic mud all over the body, wait for it to dry then bathe in the hot springs. What a treat that was! If Mijael's classes worked my body from the inside out, the mud cleansed me from the outside in. We left there feeling relaxed and silky smooth!
Mud covered warriors!
After saying good-bye to my son and my Panamanian family, we travelled to the Bahamas to spend our last few days of summer with our Bahamian family. My brother- and sister-in-law took us out on their boat to Rose Island for a relaxing day on the beach. As I sat on the beach, listening to my husband and his brother chat and watching my sisters-in-law swimming in the sea I longed to move closer to 'home.' Even though I am originally from California, home to me is where my family is.  Home is also that peaceful place within me that I go to when I've settled into a posture, especially a particularly difficult one. It is a place of love, peace, surrender and acceptance.

Relaxing and thinking about 'home.'

So, here I am back in Dubai, safe and sound and in one piece, thank God.  Fields of Yoga classes will resume shortly and I've included the class schedule below. I hope you will find a bit of 'home' in one of my classes.

Take Your Yoga Teacher on Vacation with You!

The other day while looking for some yoga resources online, I came across a great website. Do you ever feel challenged by doing yoga on your own? Does your practice wane when you are travelling? Now you can take your yoga teacher with you wherever you go! Take a moment and check out Yogaglo online

They have a wonderful array of classes for all levels, taught by famous yogis/yoginis. The styles range from Yin Yoga to Ashtanga, Hatha, Vinyasa and more. They currently have a 15-day FREE trial period, after which the cost is only $18 USD per month (approximately 66 AED). That's less than the cost of one class in most studios in major international cities. All you need is a computer and internet access. The site is VERY user friendly and you can see previews of most classes.

I'd love to hear your feedback about the Yogaglo site if you are already using it. Feel free to comment below or email me at fieldsofyoga@gmail.com.

Enjoy!

Summer is Upon Us!

The first official day of summer is almost here. With that comes a pause in the yoga classes that I currently offer at Fraser Suites. From 20 June until 26 August 2012 Yin Yoga and Hatha Flow classes will be on hold. If you have purchased a package of classes from me, the validity period will freeze during the time I'm away and will resume after 26 August.

It is difficult to believe that June is well underway.  This time last year I was preparing for huge life changes. My wedding was 2 months away and after 15 years in my career, I had resigned my post as a full-time language teacher and head of department. I was looking forward to taking a year off to reflect on the changes in my life and to pursue certification as a yoga teacher.  The idea was to deepen my practice, focus on my new marriage and return to the classroom in fall 2012 well rested and ready to face the next couple of decades in the classroom before reaching retirement age.

The joy and peace I have found as a yoga teacher cannot be matched. The prospect of working in a room full of desks and books instead of yoga mats and bolsters doesn't hold the same appeal for me as it did a year ago. I am passionate about sharing the practice of yoga and I never want to give it up. My dilemma is that the salary and benefits that most language teachers enjoy go far beyond the income of a yoga teacher.

There are many more important things in life than money. Peace of mind, maintaining good physical and mental health and overall happiness are just a few examples. However, no one can deny that keeping food on the table and a roof over one's head are an integral part of maintaining your physical and mental health and require money...quite a lot of it if you live in Dubai.  Was it naive of me to think that I could put aside the traditional teaching career for the dream of teaching yoga and maintain the same lifestyle? Do I even want to maintain the same lifestyle?

During the summer, I will have time to contemplate these questions as my husband and I travel to the Caribbean and Panama. I hope to find a way to continue to teach yoga and contribute to our household coffers. (Feel free to chime in via the comments section below in if you have any thoughts/ideas on the matter)

Speaking of Panama, I'm eager to explore yoga studios and teachers in Panama. If you have any recommendations, please add them to the comments below or email me at fieldsofyoga@gmail.com.

I wish you a very peaceful, joyful and rejuvenating summer holiday!

          Men + Yoga = Ahhhhh....
Yoga classes always seem to be dominated by female students. Of course, there is nothing wrong with that but I find it ironic given that originally, yoga was developed for men, not women. Men tend to have tight hips, shoulders and hamstrings and suffer from the effects of high stress. Therefore, they could benefit greatly from a regular yoga practice. Today I came across a great article in Men's Health about how & why yoga can benefit men. Click here and take a look at the article!

Yoga Simplified
Do you ever feel intimidated by yoga enthusiasts? There are those that feel if you do yoga, you must also lead a raw-vegan-gluten-free-non-dairy lifestyle and spend a significant amount of time chanting, meditating and fasting in order to become 'One' with the universe.  At the other end of the spectrum are the hard-bodied folks that focus mainly on doing asanas (forgoing the diet, chanting & meditating), bending like a pretzel, seemingly balancing on one finger, whilst every muscle in the body is flexed. I've heard students and friends suggest that they have 'failed' at yoga if they don't fit into one of those ends of the spectrum. And I have to admit that as much as I enjoy reading magazines and journals focused on yoga, those periodicals often feature the yoga 'extremes' and have at times, left me feeling somewhat intimidated.

The five principles of the Sivinanda Yoga Centres are fairly simple: Exercise (Asanas), Breathing (Pranayama), Relaxation (Savasana), Diet, and Meditation (Dhyana). Anyone and every body can incorporate these principles into their lives.  We may not all incorporate them the same way or at the same level of intensity but to some degree, I believe that every person is able to practice the five principles. To help define these principles take a look at this article . One does not need to follow an extreme diet or have a perfect body to benefit from regular yoga practice. The only thing one needs is the desire to try. As Arthur says in this incredible video, "Just because you can't do it today, doesn't mean that you won't be able to do it one day. Never give up." Take five minutes and check out his courageous and incredible transformation through the practice of yoga.

There's no place like home!

Back in the UAE! I'm happy to report that I had a great trip to the USA. I was able to spend time with family and visit a couple of yoga studios. I took a wonderful Flow class at Harmony Yoga in Chatsworth, California and a challenging Hatha class Kilimanjaro in Bisbee, Arizona. What great experiences I had in both studios! I even had the opportunity to teach a private Hatha Flow class for a good friend and her daughter. It was so nice to both give and receive the gift of yoga during my travels.

Yoga Plus! classes will resume on Saturday 5 May. If you are plus-sized and would like to try this yoga class that was designed specifically for you, contact me at 050-284-4374. Drop-in Hatha Flow classes will resume at the home studio the week of 6 May.

Yoga in the Air?

Not much room for yoga practice :-(
Tonight I will be taking a 14 hour flight back to my home country...in economy class. There is nothing wrong with flying economy, of course, it's just not the most comfortable option out there.  I'm picturing myself stepping into the galley area to do a few downward dogs and Sun Salutations just to keep the blood flowing. I wonder what the flight crew will have to say about that? In a perfect world, every transcontinental flight would have a specified area for yoga practice.

I'm looking forward to spending the Easter holiday with family & friends. I'm also excited about trying out some yoga classes with teachers who are new to me. My first stop will be In Harmony Yoga http://inharmonyyoga.com/
I'm sure the sessions at In Harmony Yoga will be worth the cramped 14 hour flight!

Hatha Flow & Yoga Plus sessions will resume after my return on 18 April (insha'allah!)

I wish everyone a very peaceful start to spring and an Easter filled with love, happiness and forgiveness.
Now this is more like it!

The Benefits of Doing Sun Salutations

I always feel better inside and out after doing sun salutations (Surya Namaskar).  Here is an article I found on msn.com explaining why sun salutations are so good for you

http://arabia.msn.com/lifestyle/healthandfitness/wf/2012/march/suryanamaskar/top-10-reasons-to-begin-your-day-with-surya-namaskar.aspx?region=uae.&featureduae1

Top 10 Reasons to Begin your Day with Surya Namaskar

Top 10 Reasons to Begin your Day with Surya Namaskar
Surya Namaskar is a Sanskrit word which means obeisance or prostrations (Namaskar) to the sun (Surya). It implies that one rise before sun rise in order to do this exercise or pay obeisance to the rising sun. This is around 5 to 5:30 AM. Of course, this exercise is good no matter what time you may use it, but it is best done while the stomach is empty, before eating.
If performed correctly, this exercise composed of twelve bodily poses does not strain or cause injury. If performed in the morning, it relieves stiffness, revitalizes your body and refreshes the mind. Do it during the day and it will instantly boost you up, practice it after sundown and it helps you unwind.

Check out top ten why to Begin your Day with Surya Namaskar:
1. The obvious advantage of Surya Namaskar is the workout it provides for the muscles, but it also benefits joints, ligaments and the skeletal system by improving posture and balance. The limbs become symmetrical while the internal vital organs become more functional.

2. Practicing Surya Namaskar is beneficial for the health of digestive system. Yoga poses increase blood flow to your digestive tract and stimulate the intestinal action known as peristalsis so digestion is more efficient.
